Description

We had a great time hosting real time discussion about the Super Bowl ads this year (here is the main discussion if you missed it).  According to our unscientific Facebook poll of 150+ people, here are the top 4 Super Bowl ads of 2013.

Definitely less humor at the top.  Check out the commercials, along with our thoughts below:

1) Ram Trucks – “So God Made a Farmer”

This commercial (narrated by Paul Harvey) received about half of the overall votes.  Surprisingly (or not), this one seems to be a fairly divisive one and received quite a few negative comments as well on our Facebook post about it.  Sounds like the political system right now.

What’s your take?

2) Budweiser – The Clydesdales:  “Brotherhood”

With about 14% of the vote, this one was the second favorite.  Nobody seemed to have anything but good things to say about this one.

3) Oreo – “Whisper Fight”

The first funny commercial makes the list at #3 with 9% of the votes.  Fun concept and great stunt work. Interesting that their call to action was for Instagram.  That might be a Super Bowl first.

4) Jeep – “Whole Again”

This “tear jerker” was narrated by Oprah Winfrey.  That makes 3 out of 4 of the top videos emotion-based commercials.  Wow.

Our Thoughts

The US is still recovering from a poor economy and two wars.  Europe is still in economic chaos.  In many ways we’ve changed as a nation and as a world.  We’re emotionally drained, looking back at good times and waiting for the good days to return again.

We’ve learned that all the toys we had in the past were no match for the family and friends we have.  There’s been some retreat from materialism back to the basics.

The producers of these commercials clearly understood that and aimed to reach their audience by focusing on these themes of love and family.

What was your favorite?  What’s your take on all the emotion commercials?  Comment below.

I tend to enjoy the comedic commercials but I did like the “So God made a farmer” one.

Maybe because my in-laws are farmers but I liked the change of pace with these serious ones.
